En el diseño de la portada se representa el Madrid de finales del siglo XIX, mostrando un día nuboso y en primer plano la figura de Andrés Hurtado el protagonista, caracterizado de manera muy parecida a la del propio Baroja, ya que la novela en gran parte es autobiográfica.
The image of the book cover shows the city of Madrid in the end of XIX century, a cloudy day, and in the foreground the silhouette of Andres Hurtado, the main character in a very similar way to that of Baroja himself, since the novel largely is autobiographical.

Las Ilustraciones muestran el antiguo Instituto de San Isidro, donde se desarrolla el ambiente universitario de la época descrito por Baroja en los dos primeros capítulos de la obra.
The Illustrations show the old Institute of San Isidro in Madrid, the place of the university environment of the time described by Baroja in the first two chapters of the work.
